Unlike search engines which send out their own “spiders” to collect information on web sites, directories rely on the human element. First, sites must be submitted for consideration. Then, they are evaluated by the directory's staff and are possibly accepted for inclusion. It does require time and effort but getting listed will generate a large amount of traffic for your site.

Yahoo
The reality is that Yahoo is the #1 site for Internet searches, it is easily navigated and comprehensive in its listings and additional features. You can submit for free or pay to be submitted. Which do you think will show up first? The fee is non-refundable and does not guarantee you a spot in the directory as like the free submit.

Overture
Another popular web directory is Overture. When you are listed with them, your links will also appear in search results at Yahoo, AltaVista, CNN.com., InfoSpace, and MSN. Like Yahoo, Looksmart charges a fee just to review your site for possible inclusion; however, they do not offer free submission to the search engine.

Other Directories
